SAN FRANCISCO – The San Francisco men's tennis team opened up competition in its flagship event of the fall, the Battle in the Bay Classic, at the California Tennis Club Friday.

In singles action, Bernardo Saraiva advanced to the round of 16 after defeating Pepperdine's Kento Tenaka-Tamaki 6-0, 6-1. Saraiva, No. 109 in the ITA Preseason rankings, was the sole Don to escape the day unscathed. Three others fell in their first singles match in the tournament, but Rich Van Hout and Thomas Takemoto earned victories in the consolation round of 16 to stay alive in the brackets.

Saraiva, along with partner Nils Skajaa, earned an 8-2 victory in their doubles match, beating San Diego's Ciaran Fitzgerald and Patrick Hall, 8-2. The action continues Saturday with singles and doubles matches free and open to the public.
