The Basics
The San Francisco track team sends a contingent of six student-athletes to the NCAA West Preliminary Championships on May 23-25 in Austin, Texas. USF will compete on both the men's and women's side in the 1,500 meters and 10,000 meters, and the top 12 qualifying times from both the east and west regionals will earn a berth to the NCAA Final Championships in Eugene, Ore.
How They Got Here
Eric Causey • the freshman from Encinitas, Calif., earned a place in the NCAA preliminary round after clocking in at 29:38.44 in the 10,000 meters at the Mt. SAC Invitational, where he set a school record and finished fifth in the field • Causey also owns the school best in the 5,000 meters.
Sophie Curl • raced to the 24th-best time in the country in the 1,500 meters at the Payton Jordan Invitational • her 4:16.09 finish at the Stanford meet was good for 13th in the West • the redshirt junior from Bellingham, Wash., qualified for the NCAA Finals in the 2012 season where she placed ninth in her heat in the 1,500.
Steven Garboden • finished with the 39th-best time in the west in the 1,500 meters • posted a school-record of 3:44.38 at the West Coast Invitational, where the senior from North Bend, Ore., finished fourth • Garboden participated in the 2012 West Regionals in this same event.
Jose Madera • earned a place in the 10,000 meter field after qualifying with a time of 29:48.46 at the Mt. SAC Invitational en route to a 10th place effort • despite finishing in 50th overall in the West, the junior from Anaheim, Calif., edged into one of the final 48 qualifying spots.
Jana Soethout • the junior from Cologne, Germany, finds herself in the field for the 10,000 meters after going out with a USF record time of 34:07.61 at the Stanford Invitational, her only collegiate time recorded in the distance.
Maor Tiyouri • with a time of 34:45.34 at the Mt. SAC Invitational, the junior from Kfar Saba, Israel, notched the 29th best performance in the West • Tiyouri competed at the regionals in 2012 but failed to advance to the Championship Finals.
NCAA Regionals Outlook
“We're really excited about the squad. Advancing to the NCAA Finals is a really, really big accomplishment. You're fortunate if you get one kid to the NCAA Finals, but all of the athletes that we are bringing are in a great spot to keep advancing. Best-case scenario is we qualify 50 percent of the kids for the NCAA Finals.” - Head coach Helen Lehman-Winters
