SPOKANE, Wash. – The San Francisco men's tennis team overcame a slow start to net a 5-2 victory over Gonzaga Friday at the Stevens Center.
The Bulldogs jumped out to a 1-0 lead after the Nos. 2 and 3 pairs came away with wins. First, USF's duo of
Bernardo Saraiva and
Nils Skajaa took the top pairing with an 8-4 win, but Gonzaga quickly tied it up. After an intense battle at the final pairing on the court, Joey Brandt and Vladimir Mijatovic pulled out an 8-7(7-5) win over
Christian Brockstedt and
Timothy Tan to give the Bulldogs the early advantage in the match.
As singles started, the Dons quickly evened the score when Saraiva made quick work of Hayden Smith, finishing with a 6-2, 6-2 victory.
James Tallman and
Johan Samuelsson were next to put points on the board for the Dons, and
Thomas Takemoto's 6-3, 7-5 victory over Muzen Ismath sealed the win.
Gonzaga earned one more point on the day before
Nils Skajaa closed out the match with USF's fifth point of the afternoon, taking down Mijatovic in the day's lone three-set match, 2-6, 6-1, 6-3.
USF improves its season record to 11-12 as the Dons pick up the first West Coast Conference win of the year. With the loss, Gonzaga drops to 9-8 on the year, and remains winless in WCC action.
The Dons continue their road trip to the Pacific Northwest, taking on Portland Saturday at 11 a.m.
