Dons Sunk by Fourth Quarter Surge

SAN FRANCISCO – The San Francisco women's basketball team couldn't withstand the fourth quarter barrage from the visiting Cougars, as the Dons fell to BYU 66-57 on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, BYU improves to 12-4 on the season, and maintains a 4-1 record in West Coast Conference action. The Dons slip to 10-7 (1-5 WCC) after dropping both home contests this week, despite having the tie or lead heading into the final period in both games.

USF was paced by senior Taylor Proctor's 14 points and 12 rebounds, her seventh double-double of the season. Kalyn Simon added a career-high 13 points, her first double figure scoring effort. In the first half, the junior from San Jose, Calif., led all scorers with 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting.

The Dons held BYU to just six points in the third frame at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center, and USF went into the final 10 minutes of game action with the 40-38 lead. But on the first possession of the fourth quarter, Makenzi Morrison Pulsipher's 3-pointer put the visitors on top and left the Dons scrambling to catch up for the remainder of the game.

BYU's Lexi Eaton Rydalch, who entered the contest sixth in the nation in scoring, was held to a paltry seven points on 2-for-13 shooting after three quarters. In the fourth, the senior from Mapleton, Utah, exploded for 15 points, connecting on four of her five attempts from the field and going 6-for-7 from the line.

The Dons challenged late, and after BYU recorded its first double-digit lead of the day with the score at 53-43, USF's Zhane Dikes earned a trip to the line. The senior from Las Vegas made the first and missed the second, but Proctor was at the ready to nab the offensive rebound. The possession led to a 3-pointer for Dikes to whittle the advantage to six with 3:43 remaining.

Rydalch banked in the jumper at the shot clock buzzer to again stretch the lead with 2:35 remaining. A turnover for the Cougars was followed by a layup for Hashima Carothers off the pass from Rachel Howard. Carothers then nabbed the ball from Rydalch and Proctor connected from distance to again set the differential at six points with 1:21 to play. Fighting to the final buzzer, Simon's triple with 23.8 seconds made the score 63-57, but the Dons could get no closer as the Cougars escaped with the 66-57 victory.

USF enjoyed its largest lead of the evening with 1:10 to play in the third period after Anna Seilund's 3-pointer off the assist from Dikes put the score at 40-36. However, USF went 1-for-5 from the floor and committed five turnovers in the next seven minutes as BYU surged to the lead.

Both teams shot over 40 percent from the floor, despite a combined 10-of 36 effort from beyond the arc. The Dons finished with the 39-24 rebounding edge, and USF capitalized on its 14 offensive rebounds with 15 second chance points. Despite the difference in rebounds heavily favoring the Dons, the Cougars capitalized on another defining statistical category. USF committed 18 turnovers which led to 17 BYU points, while the Cougars were charged with just eight offensive miscues.

The Dons travel to the Southland for a pair of contests, taking on Loyola Marymount on Thursday at 7 p.m.
