SAN FRANCISCO – First-year USF women's basketball coach Molly Goodenbour has announced the signing of Australian center/forward Bec Black to a National Letter of Intent.

The 6-foot-2-inch Black, whose full name is Rebecca, was born in Coffs Harbour, New South Wales, Australia, and moved to Sydney to attend high school. A graduate of Barker College, Black has been a staple of the school's first team and captained the squad to their first Independent Sporting Association Championship in nine years in her final season, taking the New South Wales CIS Girls Basketball Championships title. The team also earned the U20 Division I Australian Schools Championship silver medal.

"We are really excited to have Bec join our program," said head coach Molly Goodenbour. "She has tremendous energy, enthusiasm, and passion for basketball. She will transition well to the college game and we are looking forward to getting her over here."

Along with playing for her school team, Black played two years for the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Spiders. She earned State Grand Final Most Valuable Player in her final year of U18 action as the team became the U18 Metropolitan winners and finished as the state championship runners-up by a slim one-point margin. In 2014, she was the youngest player for the Waratah League Championship women's team.

"Bec is an extremely hard working player on and off the court," said Nathan Lovett, Director of Activ8 Game. "She is dedicated to improving all areas of her game and enjoys the challenges of adding new aspects to her game. On the court, Bec is a tenacious defender and takes a lot of pride in shutting down her opponent and dominating the paint. She is a dominant rebounder at both ends of the court and causes problems for defenders in pick and rolls with her ability to roll to the basket or pop out and knock down the mid-range jump shot."

Black is currently a member of the Sydney University Flames U18 Academy program, and will compete for the Hornsby Spiders prior to joining the Dons. She is the first member of USF's class of 2017 to sign a letter of intent.
