SAN FRANCISCO – USF women's soccer head coach
Jim Millinder announced the seven student-athletes who have signed National Letters of Intent to join the Dons this fall. The class of 2016 features signees from both coasts and represents some of the top club programs in the country.
"I think this is an outstanding class," said Millinder, who will be entering his fifth season on the Hilltop in 2016. "You never really know until two or three years down the road, but I think this is certainly one of my best recruiting classes – maybe the best recruiting class ever here at USF, and if not then it's right up there.
"It's a deep class, it's an athletic class, it's a technical class – it's got all of the ingredients to being pretty special. I think the key with this class is versatility. The one thing I can say about this entire class is that they're so ultra competitive, and that's what you want."
Mckenzie HumpherysMckenzie HumpherysLayton, Utah | Forward | Layton HS | Celtic FC 98Mckenzie Humpherys is a three-year captain at Layton High School and her team's top scorer the past two seasons, including 16 goals as a senior, while boasting a 3.7 GPA in the classroom. With her club team, Celtic FC 98, Humpherys notched 23 goals with six assists in 2013-14, followed by 17 goals and eight assists during the 2014-15 campaign. She was a huge part of three State Cup winning teams and a squad that was ranked No. 13 in the nation.
Coach Millinder on Mckenzie Humpherys:"Big presence up front. Strong, athletic, fast. She's a very good technical player and she scores goals. I think Mckenzie will come in and vie for time right away. I've been watching her progress as a player and there are certain things you can change about her game, and I think if she does that she's going to be very, very good at the next level."
Olivia CameraOlivia Camera Potomac Falls, VA | Goalkeeper | Potomac Falls HS | VSA Elite 97Olivia Camera is a four-year varsity letterwinner and all-conference performer in both soccer and volleyball at Potomac Falls High School, helping guide her soccer team to a state runner-up finish last year and her volleyball team to a region championship. She holds the school record for most saves in a game (25) and was the team MVP as a sophomore in 2014. Camera has trained under former MLS all-star keeper Mike Ammann and helped lead her former club team, FC Virginia, to an ECNL Mid-Atlantic Conference championship.
Coach Millinder on Olivia Camera:"She's very good. A great shot blocker. Very good presence in the box. It's going to be a great battle between her and Makayla (Presgrave), but I think they both will complement each other. They're both terrific trainers and I expect big things out of Olivia. I expect her to come in and push Makayla for that starting job. Olivia does a lot of things very, very well, so I'm excited to get her in there and see what she can provide for us."
Melissa EllisMelissa EllisLivermore, Calif. | Forward/Defender | Granada HS | West Coast SC Melissa Ellis helped lead West Coast Soccer Club to three State Cup titles in a row and back-to-back national championships. At Granada High School, Ellis was named a North Coast Section scholar athlete, while earning All-EBAL honorable mention recognition as her team's leading scorer this past season.
Coach Millinder on Melissa Ellis:"Unbelievable athlete – fast, can get up and down. Both she and Miciah Madison are tough as nails and I think that's a product of their coach, Troy Dayak, who has done a really nice job of developing those kids. Melissa can play up front and in the back. It just adds a component of some more athleticism. We had a good athletic team last year, but we want to continue to get more athletic and get better athletically and I think Mel will really fill that void."
Izzie LuekenIzzie Lueken
Folsom, Calif. | Forward | Folsom HS | Placer United SCIzzie Lueken has been a part of the Norcal Player Development Program with Placer United and was selected for the Nor Cal all-star game. Lueken took home first-team Sierra Foothill League honors and was a four-year varsity player and team captain at Folsom High School. She also won the Academic Athlete Honors Award.
Coach Millinder on Izzie Lueken:"What a great kid. I saw her play about two and a half years ago. She's just so competitive. Those are the kinds of kids I love. She's left-footed, she's a goal scorer who can play up front, left back, in the midfield."
Desiree MajorDesiree MajorAnaheim Hills, Calif. | Forward/Midfield | Esperanza HS | Irvine Strikers FCDesiree Major is a four-year letterwinner who has registered two assists this season for 23
rd ranked Esperanza High School. She was selected for the Cal South ODP Pro+ State ID Pool. In the classroom, Major is a distinguished honor student who boasts a 4.0 GPA.
Coach Millinder on Desiree Major:"Desiree isn't the biggest player in presence, but she's very technical and she's got a little bit of a chip on her shoulder, too. I like that about her – she's got that competitive attitude that you really like. Those things will carry her in the next level and she can hit the snot out of the ball right and left footed. She's one of the best ball strikers I've seen in a long time. She can certainly come in and contribute right away, I believe."
Nicole KelseyNicole Kelsey Tracy, Calif. | Midfielder | Tracy HS | Mustang SCNicole Kelsey has been a captain of Mustang Soccer Club for the past five years and was selected to attend the U.S. Soccer Training Center, Northern California in 2012-2013. She was also chosen for ECNL Player Development Program, Northwest in 2014 and 2015 and in 2012 and 2013, Kelsey was a member of the Norcal Premier '98 State Pool Team PDP. Kelsey also lettered in academics all four years of her high school career.
Coach Millinder on Nicole Kelsey:"The more I've watched Nicole play over the last year or two, the more she's continued to grow on me as a player. She's very versatile, can play at the back, the midfield and up front. She's technical, athletic and what an appetite to want to play the game. She can come in and compete for playing time right away I think. She isn't one of these players who's going to take a year or two to get caught up to speed, and I want players who are going to come in and compete and try to earn a starting job as a freshman."
Miciah MadisonMiciah MadisonTracy, Calif. | Defender/Forward | Kimball HS | West Coast SCMiciah (pronounced muh-KY-uh) is a second-team all-conference honoree at Kimball High School who has won two U.S. club national championships as well as three State Cup titles with West Coast Soccer Club, where she is a teammate of fellow signee Melissa Ellis.
Coach Millinder on Miciah Madison:"Stud. Athletic. Very, very impressive. We nailed her down a couple years ago before anybody really got at her and saw her. She can get up and down, can play outside back, forward. She has the potential to be an outstanding player at the next level."
