Video HighlightsSAN FRANCISCO – The San Francisco women's basketball team dominated the visiting Pepperdine Waves wire-to-wire in the 99-75 victory on Thursday night at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center.
The Dons move to 16-10 on the year, and 7-8 in league play. With the victory, USF is guaranteed its second straight winning season, something that hasn't been seen in the program for nearly 20 years. The last consecutive stretch of winning records came in the 90s, when USF enjoyed three straight trips to the NCAA Tournament.
Junior
Rachel Howard took center stage in the career-high outing for the Berkeley, Calif., native. Howard was one of five players to hit double figures during a dominant offensive display, with
Claudia Price scoring a career-high 18 points and
Anna Seilund adding 15 points in the victory. Howard, Price, and Seilund combined to hit 10 of the Dons' 11 threes on the evening as the Waves' defense struggled to keep up.
After missing a layup with just under six minutes left in the third quarter, Howard hit seven straight shots to finish with a career-high 29 points. Howard's 10-for-12 shooting from the field was her most efficient performance of the season, which included 6-for-7 shooting from beyond the 3-point arc. Howard hit three threes in the fourth quarter, as she continued to heat up and her teammates began making a concerted effort to find her around the perimeter.
"Tonight was the type of game that I wasn't worried about scoring or anything, I was just worried about getting the win," said Howard after the banner night. "But the ball was just going in. My teammates were finding me, and pretty much all the shots were in the flow of our offense."
Defensively, the Dons overcame a career-high 16 points from 6-foot-3 Waves sophomore Devin Stanback along with 16 from wing Keitra Wallace to extend their 15 point halftime lead to as many as 37 points in the second half. With the Waves missing sisters and leading scorers Erica and Olivia Ogwumike, Pepperdine did not have enough firepower to keep up with the offensive barrage.
Offensively, San Francisco was clicking on all cylinders right from the start, hit their first three shots of the game and remained hot throughout, shooting 68.8 percent from the floor in the first quarter, including 4-for-9 3-point shooting. The Dons put three players in double figures after one, including
Zhane Dikes who added six of her game-high 11 rebounds in the first 10 minutes of action.
The Dons continued its strong play in the second quarter, leading by as many as 18 before heading into halftime break with a 49-34 advantage after a late Waves three. The Dons showed a balanced attack in the first 20 minutes of the contest with hot shooting on their end complemented by stout defense on the opposite end of the floor. USF held Pepperdine to just 38.7 percent shooting in the first half, despite Stanback scoring 13 points. The Dons' perimeter defense limited the starting backcourt of Paige Fecske and Allie Green to just 3-for-11 shooting in the first half, and a 5-for-17 effort for the game.
USF finished the night shooting 56.9 percent from the floor, with an 11-of-20 effort from distance. The Dons scooped up 35 rebounds, compared to Pepperdine's 25. USF hit the 20-assist mark for the seventh time of the season, as Dikes, Seilund and
Taylor Proctor each helped on four scoring plays.
The Dons continue their home stand against Loyola Marymount on Saturday. The Dons and the Lions tip from War Memorial at the Sobrato Center at 2 p.m., in USF's Play4Kay Pink Game on the Hilltop.
