SAN FRANCISCO – The San Francisco women's track and field team stands in 28th in the latest U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) polls, the highest ranking in program history.
The dramatic leap up - from 44th in last week's poll to 28th – is due to Charlotte Taylor's impressive run at the Payton Jordan Invitational. The senior from Spalding, England, turned in the nation's fastest 5,000 meter time of the season, earning the Dons 33.16 points in the polls.
Taylor also holds the third-fastest 10K time in the country, good for 29.30 points toward USF's total. Teammates Elena Burkard (16th – 1,500 m), Isabelle Brauer (20th – 10,000 m) and Weronika Pyzik (32nd – 5,000 m) account for the remainder of the scoring. Gaining 16 places in the standings, USF's jump is the largest of the week in the Top 40 teams.
"We are pleased to have achieved a Top 30 ranking, and we are very excited about the progress our team has made," remarked USF head coach Helen Lehman-Winters. "Our team is highly motivated to finish the season on a high note and very much looking forward to the post season."
The Dons cap the regular season this Saturday at the West Coast Last Chance Meet, hosted by USF on the campus of San Francisco State. Then, USF looks forward to the NCAA West Preliminary Championships May 25-27 at Mike A. Meyers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas in Austin.
