MTN | Dons close out weekend with win over New Mexico State

TUCSON, Ariz. -- The University of San Francisco men's tennis team faced New Mexico State University Aggies on Saturday, Jan. 27 at the Lanelle Robson Tennis Center.

With a strong battle between the two schools, the Dons walked away with the 5-2 win, and are now 2-1 for the season.

"This was a good wake up call for us today and the guys showed their resilience, and grit in their singles play," said head coach Pablo Pires de Almeida.

The Aggies were off to a good start in the doubles when they took the match win against Oliver Poysti and Lucas Marinelle. After dropping its first matchup, the Dons evened up the match when the pair of Ryan Marker and Paul Giraud earned a 6-4 win.

After taking New Mexico State took a double's point, USF came back in the singles, securing five match wins in the singles round. While the first singles match was dropped by Giraud, the Dons came back with Joenhagen's 6-4, 6-0 win as well as Marker's 7-5, 6-3 victory. Zincirli, Poysti and Marinelle had wins of their own and they secured the Dons 5-2 victory over the Aggies.

"We missed a lot of opportunities to close out our sets in our doubles point today," said assistant coach Matt Berry. "But we had a great response from our upperclassmen in the singles. It was a good fight and we were willing to work harder on the bigger points to get the victory."

The Dons will continue on the road to Davis to face UC Davis on Friday, Feb. 3. at the Mayra Welch Tennis Center. The matchup is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
