Spaulding has a 1.20 goals against average going into the meeting with Portland, while recording 47 saves and two shutouts. Defensively, the Dons give up an average of 1.5 goals per game and their opponents allow the same mark per game. As a team, USF has scored 19 goals on the season, but has allowed just as many.

The Pilots took eleven shots, two of which Spaulding made saves on. Casey beat two players and Spaulding before feeding Gray for the Pilots first goal of the second half at 47:39. Gray struck again when Casey Barber slipped him the ball at the top of the box, where he deflected a shot past an onrushing Spaulding. Spaulding's goals against average moved to 1.34 per game in the loss, as his save total rose to 49 on the season.

Tiberiu Marinescu and unidentified Spartan fight for possession. show signs of fatigue. In talking with Dons goalie Scott Spaulding after the game, he stated, "The Dons had played seven games in the last twelve days, and were in need of a break." This, combined with injuries to three starters, took away from the Dons attack. USF opened up the game with fresh legs, but tired quickly, and San Jose State began to dominate the ball before the intermission. This shift of momentum gave the Spartans the edge going into the half. The second half of play resumed, much as the first, as a defensive struggle. Tim Garlick of the Dons led the defense, along with the efforts of goalie Scott Spaulding (TheFoghorn).
