Folan was born to an Irish father and Salvadorian mother here in California. He spent a lot of time in Central America as a child -- thus, learned a lot of Spanish, but very little Irish! He spent his high school and college years in the Bay Area, attending Bellarmine College Preparatory in San Jose, and the University of San Francisco as a Presidential Scholar. He pursued his Irish heritage and received his Medical Degree from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. He eturned to the United States to complete an internship and residency training at the University of Washington in Spokane, Washington. While there, he became involved in studies on diabetic nephropathy, nutrition, and inpatient hospital medicine.

After completing his training, he continued with research and worked as a full-time Hospitalist for two years prior to moving to the Bay Area to work in Internal Medicine (SutterHealth.org).
