Maybe no family has had more of an influence on Northern California tennis than the Louies. The Louies learned the game on the public courts at Golden Gate Park. The five kids were all top junior players. Sister Marcie, who is seven years older than Maureen "Peanut", preceded her on the tour. Sisters Cici and Marisa and brother Ronnie each played at USF, and have stayed in tennis as teachers (SFGate).

Something needs to be done about tennis at USF. It is virtually impossible for this team to compete adequately on any level of competition. Fortunately, we have an outstanding player in Ron Louie. Vic Brown has the potential to become a good player. But, what can you do? After Vic and Ron, the rest of the team belongs in a beginning tennis class. It is hard to make trees out of blades of grass. In essence, we need talent if we are to compete adequately.

Most of the schools we play recruit players via scholarships. Pepperdine is at the top of the list with all top six players receiving scholarships. They are currently ranked in the top ten in the nation and at the recent WEAC championships, they played a player in each of the six singles and each of the three doubles brackets in the final round. All of them won their rounds. There is no way we should every play them.

We can't even beat average Junior College teams like De Anza and Marin. We lost to both of them, winning only one match and losing all the rest. UN-Reno beat us 1-8 as have all other teams we have played.

My advice is to drop intercollegiate tennis as an NCAA sport and add another (i.e. Volleyball). If we cannot drop it we should get some means of se curing good players, at least six (USFFoghorn).
