Russell D. Keil was a member of the Block Club and was on the staff of The Ignatian yearbook. He played tackle and quarterback for the then Gray Fog.

Russell Keil was born in San Francisco, a descendant of a family that had come to California during the Gold Rush. His uncle, Hugo Keil, built the family home on 38 acres of land at Keil Cove in 1902.

Keil was a graduate of St. Ignatius High School and the University of San Francisco and attended the Foreign Service school at Georgetown University and the College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland.

Keil was an executive with the Keil Family Real Estate Company in San Francisco and for more than 60 years was active in a number of civic organizations. He was a past president of the Society of California Pioneers, as well as the Downtown Association and the Union Square Association in San Francisco. He was one of the founders of the Belvedere Nursery School, the Southern Marin Recreation Center, and the Belvedere-Tiburon Landmarks Society. He was also instrumental in saving St. Hilary's Church, a Tiburon landmark. He was also a trustee of USF and a member of the President's Advisory board at Georgetown. He received a knighthood in the Vatican Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre, and was also knighted by the Spanish government (SFGate).
