Harrison will have some time on the basketball court after her surprise appearance during the Australia game. This 6' 3" center, who missed most of last season due to injuries, was named to the All-Conference team in 1987-1988, and led the conference in rebounding, averaging 10.3 per contest.

Senior guard Alice Solis contributed 14 points in joining Boyenga, a sophomore, on the All-Tournament Team, while red-shirt senior Melinda Harrison added ten points and nine rebounds. Freshman Tammy Adkins proved to be most generous for USF, dishing out eight assists. Co-Head Coach Bill Nepfel was generally pleased with the play of his Dons, but noted their inability to convert on their free throws the difference in the game. "These early season games are preparation for upcoming conference play," explained Nepfel, "and we're still working the kinks out." USF got to the championship game after absolutely destroying Southern Utah State, 94-54, behind 18 points from Solis, and 14 points from Boyenga. The Dons received a scare in the second half as center Melinda Harrison went down hard and was out for the game. Fortunately for USF, Harrison wasn't injured and was set for Saturday's game.

In the second game, shortstop Mary Beth Kelly opened and closed the second inning with a double and a sprained ankle. Though she was safe, Kelly suffered a bad twist while returning to second after her first hit. Running for Kelly, junior Renee Alexander was able to score the first of three for the Dons with a stolen base. USF won 3-0 against the Aztecs. Great performances offensively were seen by Walker, batting .500 for thc day, and key hits by senior first baseman Melinda Harrison, Blackburn, Ibarra, Gonzalez, and King, who also made a strong performance coming off the bench for Kelly (TheFoghorn).
