Alfred Benjamin Souza, Jr. was born on June 27, 1940 in Onomea, HI. He attended his local Saint Joseph’s High School and then USF on a baseball scholarship. At USF, he batted a .330 and was the team’s leader in extra base hits, including seven triples. The summer following his junior year, he played for the Wanderers in the Hilo League and earned the Big Island’s Top Athlete of the Year Award in 1961. He had a .978 record in his 45 trips at bat, with 7 home runs, three doubles and ten singles in 13 games.

After graduating in 1962, he joined the United States Navy in 1964, and after OCS training, worked in the Communications Section of the Submarine Division, stationed in Pearl Harbor. He eventually reached the rank of Lieutenant.

After the military he returned to Hilo and worked in auto sales, rising to the position of manager. He was active in the Elks Club, the Businessman’s Softball League, and captained an amateur golf team. He was inducted into the USF Hall of Fame in 1977.
