Anthony “Tony” Sherman was born on June 22, 1930 in Fort Worth, TX, and was raised in San Francisco. He attended George Washington High School, and was a San Francisco Prep Rifle Champion in 1948. At USF he won 34 individual medals in competitions. His contributions to the team during his four seasons from 1949 to 1952 were considerable: the Dons compiled a record of 158 wins and 27 losses, including 8 competitive championships.

As a freshman, Sherman was a member of the 1949 team that won the College Title in the Sixth Army Tournament, and the William Randolph Hearst National ROTC Title. Sherman finished the season as the National VFW Champion by scoring a 298 out of a possible 300. In his sophomore year, Sherman scored 192 to lead the USF ROTC team to their second Hearst Western State Championship.

In his junior year, the rifle team won the “D” League title of the San Francisco Rifle Association, the Sixth Army Area competition for the third year and tied for first in the NCIC Rifle Association. The team’s success gave them permanent possession of the American Legion Perpetual Trophy. That same year, the team broke Cal’s five-year winning streak. Sherman was flawless as the top shooter in nearly all contests. He averaged better than 280 for the season and was selected by the NRA to the All-American Rifle Team. He was also named the Foghorn’s Athlete of the Month.

Sherman was elected team captain his senior year. The team won the Sixth Army’s Intercollegiate Indoor Rifle Match, and in the Southwest Invitational Rifle Championship, with the Dons sharpshooters scoring 7,506 points out of a possible 8,000. The Dons also took top honors in the San Francisco Rifle Association League.

Sherman received his Bachelors’ Degree in 1952, and spent the next four years in the United States Army as a 1st Lieutenant in the Korean War. He then worked for the United States Secret Service as a Special Agent, which included time in the White House during the John F. Kennedy administration, until his retirement in 1980.
