Jerry Mullen was born on November 7, 1950 in Berkeley, and attended Saint Mary’s High School and then USF from 1951 to 1955. He was a two-time captain for the USF basketball team. Nicknamed the “Jumper”, he was regarded one of the finest floor men in program history. Mullen grew into basketball, and under Head Coach Phil Woolpert and Assistant Coach Ross Giudice he steadily developed into a polished player driven by a desire to improve. Woolpert said of him: "Jerry has as much or more desire as any player I have ever had the pleasure to coach or see. He doesn't know what half-speed is, always putting out everything he has (USF Athletics)."
Mullen averaged 13.8 PPG and 7.1 RPG as a senior. He was a teammate of Bill Russell, and the Dons reached the NCAA Title Game for their first of two titles. Gerald earned a place on the First Team All-Conference and an Associated Press Honorable Mention selection following his 1954-1955 season, and was also named to the All-Western Regional Team.
After his USF career, he was drafted by the New York Knicks in the Second Round (13th pick overall) of the 1955 NBA Draft. Mullen however, went to the Amateur Athletic Union and played for the Wichita Vickers for six seasons. The Vickers won the AAU Title in 1959 with Mullen playing as a reserved role player.
