J. Frederick Haley was born in 1919 in Oakland and attended University High School. He attended USF in 1937 and played on the freshman football team for three years prior to joining the varsity team his senior year as a right tackle. Known as “Doc,” Haley graduated in 1942, and then joined the United States Marine Corps and served in the South Pacific for three years. He was discharged in 1946 at the rank of Captain. After his discharge, Haley returned to USF and worked as a Junior Varsity Coach.
