James Ryan was born in Berkeley, CA and attended Saint Mary’s High School. Prior to attending USF, he served in the United States Air Force, and played football on the Fourth Air Force team which was headquartered at March Air Force Base in Riverside County, CA. Once at USF, he played quarterback and was considered one of the finest signal callers on the West Coast. He completed 45-105 passes (42.9%) for 300 yards and four touchdowns, and helped USF achieve the number four spot in the nation. He graduated from USF in 1950.
