John James Bazzano was born on April 23, 1914 in Stella, Italy. He emigrated to the United States at the age of 16, and attended Saint Ignatius College Preparatory, where he was a member of their Chess Club. He attended the then Saint Ignatius College in the class of 1934, and was a member of the Dons Soccer Team that won the National Championship. He earned his medical degree at the School of Medicine at Creighton University, and served as a Captain in the Unites States Army in the Aleutian Islands during World War II. He practiced medicine for forty years at Saint Mary's and Saint Joseph's Hospitals in San Francisco before retiring in 1979.
