John Drocco was born on April 29, 1928, in San Francisco, and attended Roosevelt Jr. High School, and then Polytechnic High School, where he ran track, and played football. He made All-City in hurdles in 1946. During the summer of 1946, he worked for the United States Forestry Service, and for the phone company. He was drafted into the United States Army during the Korean War, and was stationed at Schofield Barracks, in Honolulu.
After his military service, he became a San Francisco Fire Department Engineer, at Engine 48/37 on Potrero Hill for many years, finally retiring as Captain of Prevention. He obtained a Master’s in Fire Science, and in Physical Education, and entered the field of Education. He was Head Football Coach at Lick-Wilmerding High School, and coached tennis at Presentation High School, in San Francisco. At USF, he coached tennis, cross country, and was a Defensive Back Coach.
