Joseph Francis X. Murphy was born on March 28, 1914, in San Francisco of an Irish immigrant father. He attended Saint Ignatius Preparatory, and then USF. At 6’ 4”, 190 lbs., he played basketball for the Dons and was a member of the Block Club. He graduated in 1935.
