Joseph Haggerty II graduated from USF in 1966, and volunteered as a physician for thirty years, taking care of the school’s Division I athletic teams. He attended Saint Louis University School of Medicine, and completed his orthopedic residency in San Francisco in 1976. He served for two years in the United States Navy as a Lieutenant Commander, where he was in charge of the Knee Surgery Department, and did spinal surgery for the Navy for the Northwestern United States. He joined an orthopedic practice in San Francisco in 1978. He was also Team Physician for the 49ers from 1978-1979.
