Phil Vukicevich was born on January 9, 1931 in San Francisco. He attended Loyola High School and USF from 1949 to 1953, playing on the basketball team. A left-handed shooter, he was second in scoring as a junior, and led in scoring as a senior, averaging 12.3 PPG. Vukicevich earned All-American Honors in 1953 as a senior.
Following USF, he enlisted in the United States Army during the Korean War. He returned to USF as an Assistant Coach to Pete Peletta in the 1960s, and in 1966, served as Head Coach for eleven years when Peletta became USF’s first Athletic Director. He posted a 51-55 record as Head Coach. His best season was in 1967-1968 when the Dons finished third in the West Coast Athletic Conference with a 10-4 record. Jim Brovelli, who played for Vukicevich said that making extra passes on offense, and being in the proper defensive position were two earmarks of his coaching philosophy. Brovelli stated that he learned a lot from Vukicevich, and went on to coach the Dons from 1985 to 1995 (USF Athletics).
After his coaching career, he worked as Basketball Promotion Manager for Adidas for twenty years.
