Phillip Joseph Kearney was born on June 4, 1920 in San Francisco, CA. He was a third-generation San Franciscan whose father was a highly decorated San Francisco Department Fire Chief. He attended Saint Ignatius College Preparatory and USF in the class of 1942. He was Student Body President and starred in football, soccer and rugby. He was a decathlon champion his sophomore, junior, and senior years. After he graduated, he served in the United States Army Field Artillery Unit from 1942 to 1951 at the rank of Captain. He participated in the Normandy invasion, and the Battle of the Bulge, and was decorated for bravery in Belgium.
After his discharge, he joined the University of Santa Clara as an Assistant Professor of Military Science and Tactics. In 1954, he left Santa Clara to work as a real estate appraiser at the San Francisco Assessor's Office. After sixteen years, he was named Director of the city's Health Service System, which administered health care programs for city employees. In 1971, he was named the President of the San Francisco Retirement Board. He retired in 1981. He was inducted into the USF Hall of Fame in 1971. His three brothers also attended USF and were active in sports.
