Richard Augustus Parina was born on July 5, 1906 in Saint Louis, MO. He graduated from the then Saint Ignatius College in 1931, and played football for the then Grey Fog, alongside fellow Hall of Famers Oscar Higuera, Bob Kleckner, and John O'Marie under Coach Needles. He was a member of Tau Delta Beta and of Alpha Lambda. After graduation, he worked for a merchandise vending machine company in San Francisco. He served in the military during World War II.

He established the Flynn-Parina Endowed Scholarship Fund to assist student-athletes, in memory of Father Hubert Flynn, S.J., the former Dean of the College of the Arts and Sciences. Parina was inducted into the USF Hall of Fame in 1969, in the categories of Football and Special Category for his generosity in providing scholarships to student-athletes. He was also a Trustee and Regent of University of California.
