Reflections from Jaime Hinojosa, on Samuel R. Johnstone (1918-2009). Johnstone is the presenting sponsor of USF's annual Swanson Memorial Golf Tournament, through the Sam and Pauline Johnstone Foundation.
Samuel Johnstone was born on December 10, 1918, in Portland, OR. He was the youngest of three children, and learned to run at an early age. Johnstone became an athlete while fighting and playing sports with older children.

Johnstone attended Polytechnical High School in San Francisco, and was involved in many sports but he excelled at football. After high school, he was recruited by multiple colleges around the country, including Notre Dame, but chose USF.

Following the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, Johnstone enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps, and flew 26 bombing missions over Europe as a B-17 pilot. After the war, he entered the aerospace business in San Leandro, CA which is still run as a family business. He was inducted into the San Francisco Preparatory Hall of Fame in 2005, and into the USF Hall of Fame in 1981.
