Stefan Gartrell was born on January 14, 1984 in San Francisco, and attended Sacred Heart Cathedral High School. At Sacred Heart, he played baseball for the Diamond Dons, and earned All-WCC honors his junior and senior years. At 6’ 3”, and 190 lbs., he played right field, left field, and as a designated hitter.
 
He led the Dons in RBIs in both 2005 and 2006, and was fourth in RBIs all-time at 141, and played 171 games. His senior year, he earned First-Team All-WCC honors after hitting .335 with 62 runs batted in 62 games. In 2006 the Dons reached the WCC Championship and he was named to Baseball America’s Top 50 Seniors List. 
 
He was drafted by the Chicago White Sox in the 31st Round of the 2006 MLB June Amateur Draft, and played his rookie year for the Bristol White Sox (61 games) and the Birmingham Barons (66 games) with .301. From 2006 to 2015, he played for a number of minor leagues: Kannapolis Intimidators, Winston-Salem Warthogs, Peoria Saguaros, Charlotte Knights, Toros del Este, Gwinnett Braves, Caribes de Anzoátequi, Piratas de Campeche, Naranjeros de Hermosillo, Fargo-Moorehead Redhawks, and the Amarillo Thunderheads. In 993 games among the minors and the international leagues, he hit .270, and 571 RBIs, and 155 home runs.
 
After retiring from baseball, he committed to mentoring youth in his hometown, and founded Ripple Effect 22, a faith-based program designed to reach disaffected youth in San Francisco, Oakland and in San Mateo.
