William Lawrence Cox was born on January 15, 1933 in San Francisco, and attended Saint Ignatius College Preparatory. He attended USF in the class of 1955, and played Gaelic football and as a goalie for the USF Soccer team. The 1953 soccer team was named the All-America team that year.
 
He served in the United States Army as a 1st Lieutenant and was stationed in Augusta, GA. After his service, he worked in the automobile business and was the owner of the Bill Cox Cadillac-Buick dealership in Oakland, CA. He was an active Oakland Rotarian and a loyal 49er fan. He was inducted into the USF Hall of Fame in 1980.
