Winford Boynes was born on May 17, 1957 in Greenville, SC. He attended Capitol Hill High School in Oklahoma City, and USF from 1975 to 1978. Listed at 6’ 6” and 185 lbs., he played guard for the Dons. He finished his USF career with 1702 points,  a FG% of .523 and a FT% of .825.
 
In the 1978 NBA Draft, he was selected by the New Jersey Jets in the first round (13th overall), and played for them in 133 games as a shooting guard and small forward, averaging 9.0 PPG and 2.2 RPG. In 1980, he was traded to the Dallas Mavericks and became a starter. In his first game, Boynes scored 21 points in a 103-92 win over the San Antonio Spurs. 
 
He moved on to play in three European leagues: Fenerbahce in Istanbul, Turkey, 1983-1984, Pantterit in Helsinki, Finland, 1985-1986, and Nice BC (Basketball Champions League), 1986-1987. His career highlights include: twice being named Third Team All-American NABC in 1977 and 1978; First Team Parade All-American, 1975; and Fourth-Team Parade All-American in 1974. He scored 1,478 points overall (8.4 PPG), grabbed 363 rebounds (2.1 RPG) and dished out 207 assists (1.2 APG).
