SPOKANE — The University of San Francisco volleyball team won at Gonzaga for the first time in three years on Thursday night at the Martin Centre.
USF swept Gonzaga 25-17, 25-19 and 25-22 to claim its first West Coast Conference win of the season.
"We came out really focused, hungry and determined and that allowed us to play some good volleyball," USF head coach Gilad Doron said. "We played as a team and had different players step up at different times when we needed someone."
After a back-and-forth beginning to the first set, the Dons finally took control at the mid-way point. Holding a 16-15 lead, USF rattled off a 9-2 run keyed by three kills from Hadley Simmons and two by Malina Terrell to take the first set. San Francisco hit .300 and Gonzaga committed nine attack errors.
USF never trailed in the second set, leading by as many as six points multiple times throughout the set. The Bulldogs did, however, pull to within 20-19, but kills from Sarah Mandala, Alycia Cox and Joan Caloiaro allowed the Dons to score five unanswered points to take the set.
The final set was up for grabs until the mid-point of the set. With a 13-12 lead, the Dons went on a 4-0 run powered by a kill and two solo blocks by Cox to create enough separation to control the rest of the set.
Terrell tied her career-high with 13 kills, committing just one error to finish the game with a .600 hitting percentage.
Cox totaled 10 kills and two solo blocks, while Whitney Swain was just two digs shy of a career high after collecting 24 digs. Caloiaro posted a double-double for the second consecutive game, totaling 23 assists, 12 digs and five kills. Sophomore Leanna Ludes added 14 assists.
"Malina was really sharp and it was probably her best match of the season," Doron said. "Whitney played really, really well and didn't let anything fall and Alycia played smart, aggressive and confidently."
The Dons held the Bulldogs to just .078 hitting for the night, with Gonzaga committing 24 attacking errors.
