(Washington DC) - Jennifer Azzi, head coach of the USF women's
basketball team, joined the WNBA Champion Phoenix Mercury and
President Barack Obama at the White House Monday in the Nation's
capital. Azzi helped lead an event, spearheaded by First Lady
Michelle Obama, on the White House basketball courts to promote
health and wellness.
In addition, Azzi had the opportunity to meet and speak for a
few moments with President Obama.
"After honoring the Mercury, President Obama walked over and
spoke with me," said Azzi. "He is really a fan of the game. He was
extremely respectful and complementary of the women's game. He has
such a kindness and sincerity about him. He is one of the most
charismatic people I have ever met."
Azzi, who has been on the road recruiting for the Dons, traveled
to Washington DC during a NCAA mandated dead period for
recruiting.
Following a special presentation by President Obama, Azzi along
with the Mercury and the WNBA, joined forces with Let's Move - a
national campaign led by First Lady Michelle Obama - to promote
fitness, nutrition and self-confidence amongst the youth of the
United States.
Azzi and the Mercury led 40 boys and girls from the local YMCA
in the first-ever public event on the White House basketball court.
The court is a private secluded court on White House grounds,
surrounded by lush greenery and a 15-foot fence complete with White
House branded basketballs.
