MALIBU, Calif. – In a step-for-step battle to the finish line, San Francisco's Eric Causey raced to a second place finish at the West Coast Conference Cross Country Championships Saturday.

The sophomore from Encinitas, Calif., moved to the lead back from the start, running in third at the first split times. By the third loop around the 8,000 meter course, Causey had moved up to second with BYU's Jason Witt pacing the field at Alumni Park.

Causey jumped up to first for a portion of the final lap, with Witt who dropping to third with Portland's Scott Fauble maintaining second. However, Witt used his long stride and a strong kick on the final straightaway to catch and pass Causey by a nose. Decided by less than a second, both Witt and Causey's final time came in at a speedy 23:14, the top 8K time for a USF runner this season.

Causey has finished in the top 5 individually in each of his four outings, with two wins, a second-place finish and a fourth to his name. Causey was named to the All-WCC Cross Country team after his stellar performance on the course. As a team, the Dons finished fifth in the standings.

Junior Jarrett Moore clocked in at 24:52 in 25th place to earn 21 points toward the team score, and senior Gustavo Mena put together a time of 25:06 to finish as the third USF runner on the day. Sophomore Nick Hicks and freshman Tom Bradley rounded out the scorers for the Dons. Adam Smith, who ran the majority of the race with just one shoe after losing the other near the start, and Patrick Kunkel were also in the field for USF.

The team has two weeks to prepare for the NCAA West Regionals to be held Nov. 15, at Haggin Oaks GC in Sacramento, Calif.
