SAN FRANCISCO – The University of San Francisco women's tennis team notched its first West Coast Conference victory of the year Friday afternoon, downing the BYU Cougars, 4-2, at Golden Gate Park.
The Dons got on the board early, picking up the doubles point and the first two singles points behind wins from USF's lone nationally ranked player, Andrea Ka, and fellow freshman Brooke Irish.
BYU countered with victories from Aubrey Paul and Nicolette Tran to pull within 3-2 of USF, but Dons freshman Sofia Holmberg posted an emphatic 6-2, 6-3 victory over Meghan Sheehan-Dizon to clinch USF's first conference victory of the year.
“Today was a good conference win for us,” said USF coach Hilary Somers. “We stayed present with positive energy throughout the match and the girls did a good job of playing well when they needed to.”
The Dons return to the court to play host to the Montana Grizzlies on Saturday, March 23 at Golden Gate Park at 11 a.m.
