SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The University of San Francisco women's tennis team kicked off the 2013 WCC Championships in fine fashion Wednesday morning, defeating the Portland Pilots by a score of 4-2 at the Barnes Tennis Center.
The Dons opened the day with victories from

Yurie Hashiguchi /
Milica Hadzi-Tanovic to take an early 1-0 lead.
The contest marked a rematch of last week's showdown in Portland, Ore., that the Dons won 4-3 behind doubles victories from the same tandems.
The Pilots rallied to tie the match at 2-2 before
Marina Nikolic's 7-5, 7-6 win over Valeska Hoath left the Dons needing just one point to advance to Thursday's second round.
Portland's Sabine Fuchs gave
Milica Hadzi-Tanovic all she could handle at No. 3 singles, taking the first 3-6 before Hadzi-Tanovic stormed back to take the next two sets 6-4 and 6-3.
“Hopefully we got the first round jitters out today,” said head coach
Hilary Somers. “We're looking forward to tomorrow's matchup with San Diego because we had such a competitive match with them earlier this year.”
With Wednesday's win, the Dons advance to Thursday's second round and will take on fourth-seeded and 56
th-ranked San Diego at 9:30 a.m. USF jumped out to a 3-1 lead in their April 5 matchup before the Toreros came back to stun the Dons, 4-3, on their Senior Day.
