STANFORD, Calif. – After opening the 2013 season with an individual title at the USF Invitational, Eric Causey raced to a fourth place individual finish at the Stanford Invitational to lead the University of San Francisco cross country team to fourth on Saturday.
Causey finished the 8K loop at Stanford Golf Course in 24:48 to pace the USF contingent. Causey's stellar start to the cross country season follows a 2013 track campaign in which the then-freshman qualified for the NCAA Preliminary Championships and set records in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters.
The sophomore from Encinitas, Calif., was outpaced by two Stanford runners, Erik Olson and Jim Rosa, and Loyola Marymount's Weston Strum. Olson, the day's individual winner, clocked in a mere three seconds ahead of Causey in the race of 243 student-athletes.
"I was impressed with Eric's race," head coach Helen Lehman-Winters said. "He ran very smart, executed well and was closing hard on the leaders at the finish. Jarrett Moore also had a great race. He was buried early in the race and moved patiently through the field."
Moore's time of 25:50 was good for 13th, after the junior from San Francisco worked his way through traffic to finish with a Top 15 result for the second-straight meet. Nick Hicks, Gustavo Mena and freshman Tom Bradley all contributed to the Dons' team score of 113 points and a fourth-place finish.
"I think our men put forth a solid effort today," Lehman-Winters said. "We are young and our men are adjusting to running 8,000 meters. Our three freshmen will continue to get better and better with every outing."
The next outing on tap for the Dons is the Sacramento State's Hornet Inter-regional Jamboree on Oct. 4. The race will be held at Haggin Oaks GC, site of the 2013 NCAA West Regionals, and will give USF a preview of November's final race before the NCAA Championships.
