Led by the team's top finisher, Jana Soethout, the Dons finished 36th in the Wisconsin Adidas Invitational on Friday in Madison, Wisc.
"Our women got some good experience today running in the most competitive invitational in the country," said head coach Helen Lehman-Winters. "It was definitely a learning experience ... . Our entire squad had difficulty maintaining the pace from 2,000-4,000 meters and this was really costly in the team scoring. We came back well in the last 2,000 meters but that does not help you much as by that time your race has gotten away from you."
Running in a field of 265 runners and 38 teams, Soethout, a senior, placed 109th with a time of 21:19 on the 6,000-meter course.
Freshman Haley Dorris, competing in her fourth collegiate race, was the next Don to cross the finish line, placing 170th with a time of 21:50. Sophomore Ashley Moffett, one of five underclassmen to compete for the Dons on Friday, finished behind Dorris, placing 200th in 22:09.
Senior Kate Jamboretz, the only member of this year's team who competed for the Dons in this race last season, placed 209th in 22:18.
Sophomore Madeline Haupert was the fifth Don to cross the finish line, placing 246th with a time of 23:09. Freshman Kelsey Nielsen placed 249 in 23:18 and sophomore Daryl Phill placed 252 in 23:24.
Michigan State took first place overall with 87 points, while Crystal Nelson, of Iowa State, won the race with a time of 19:35.
The Dons now begin preparing for the West Coast Conference Championship meet in two week, where USF hopes to claim the title for the sixth consecutive year.
"We will now switch our focus and prepare for the conference championships, a very different kind of meet than we experienced today -- smaller and much more about head-to-head competition," Lehman-Winters said.
