MARICOPA, Ariz. -- USF shot the lowest team score of the day, turning in a 4-under 284 to finish second at the Cowboy Southern Dunes Invitational held at the Ak-Shin Southern Dunes Golf Club in Maricopa, Ariz.
The Dons' 54-hole score of 871 (+7) trailed first place Idaho by 17 strokes, as the Vandals ran away from the field with a winning score of 854 (-10) on rounds of 285-281-288. A strong final round helped the Dons pull away from third place UC Santa Barbara, which finished at 879 (+15).
Jalen Griffin shot a final round 69 to net his first top-10 finish as a collegian, placing ninth with a score of 217 (+1). The freshman had five birdies on his card and played the back nine three under par.
Senior Jobim Carlos tied for 11th at 218 (+2) following a final round 73.
Sophomore Max Alcorn, who began the day tied tied for ninth on the leaderboard, finished in a tie for 19th at 222 (+6) after a final round 75. Alcorn was +4 on the front side but picked up three birdies on the backside.
The Dons' lowest round of the day belonged to freshman Henry Chung, who shot a 5-under 67 to move into a tie for 22nd at 223 (+7). Chung had five birdies on his bogey-free round.
Junior Sebastian Crookall-Nixon tied for 26th at 224 (+8) following a final round 75.
The Dons will return to action Oct. 13-14 at the Alister Mackenzie Invitational, which will be held at the Meadow Club in Fairfax, Calif.
