Jana Soethout navigated her way through a field of more than 200 competitors to finish 12th and lead the Dons to a 12th place overall finish at the NCAA Cross Country West Regional on Friday at the Stanford Golf Course in Palo Alto. Soethout will learn Sunday whether she will receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Cross Country National Championships in Terre Haute, Ind. on Nov. 22.
"Jana posted the highest individual finish in program history," said head coach Helen Lehman-Winters. "We knew Jana had it in her so it was good to see her leave it on the course today. She ran a very patient race and really made her way through the field. The west region is ridiculously strong so we just hope for an at-large berth."
Soethout, a senior and German native, completed the 6,000-meter course in 20:37, just over a minute off the top time. Senior Kate Jamboretz, the only Don to compete in this race last season, finished less than a minute behind Soethout in 45th place with a time of 21:19.
"It is unfortunate that her season had to come to end today," Lehman-Winters said. "Kate is by far one of the hardest working kids I have every coached and we are thankful to have her for another two years on the track."
Two freshmen, who have emerged as important contributors for the Dons in their first collegiate seasons, again delivered strong performances on Friday. Haley Dorris placed 79th with a time of 21:49, while Ashley Moffett placed 103rd in 22:11.
Sophomore Daryl Phill finished in 116th place in 22:22, and fellow sophomore Kelsey Nielsen placed 153rd in 22:57. Junior Madeline Haupert rounded out the field for the Dons, crossing the finish line in 23:03 to place 160th.
"Our women entered the weekend the 14th ranked team in the region and finished 12th," Lehman-Winters said. "We were hoping for a top ten finish, but with as little experience as we have on this squad, we will take the improvement and work on getting this winter and spring."
The University of Oregon finished first overall, while Boise State claimed second to secure trips to the national championships. Shelby Houlihan, of Arizona State, won the race with a time of 19:32, which also ensured a spot at nationals next weekend.
