SAN FRANCISCO – Paced by a 1-2 finish in the 800 meters, the San Francisco men's track and field team closed out the Johnny Mathis Invitational with a third place team finish Saturday at Cox Stadium.
Gustavo Mena, a senior from Oxnard, Calif., outpaced the field in the 800 meters with a time of 1:54.19 to take first out of 24 competitors. Running in the second heat of the day, teammate Jarrett Moore raced to the front of his section and finished second overall right behind Mena, clocking in at 1:54.67. Moore, a junior from San Francisco, finished with a personal best in the event, and paired it with another collegiate best in the 1,500 meters.
In that race, Moore finished in 3:58.52 to take seventh. Jose Madera, opening up his track season, placed second in the event. The redshirt junior from Anaheim, Calif., rounded the track in 3:54.24 and outpaced some of the top competition in the West Coast Conference, besting Rajpaul Pannu of Saint Mary's and Santa Clara's Joey Berriatua who finished third and fourth, respectively.
Nile Norwood jumped to third in the triple jump, finishing as the top collegiate participating in the event. Norwood, a junior from Olympia, Wash., posted a mark of 13.84 meters, in his sixth and final attempt of the day. Coupling Saturday's results with Friday's record performance in the javelin, the Dons finished the meet with 65 team points to take third despite competing in just six events.
"Our men made quite a bit of progress across the board today, and we accomplished what we needed," head coach Helen Lehman-Winters said. "Jose ran very well off of a slow pace and closed hard the last 300 meters. Gus put out a dominant win in his 800 meter heat and Jarrett came back with an equally impressive solo win in his heat. We are pleased with where the team is right now, and will get back to work the next couple weeks before the real racing begins in April."
After a weekend off from competition, April starts with a bang as USF will participate in two meets April 4-5. A contingent of Dons will participate in the San Francisco State Distance Carnival while other student-athletes compete at the Stanford Invitational.
