SAN FRANCISCO – Sean Gomes paced the San Francisco men's track and field team at the West Coast Last Chance Meet, recording a school record as he rounded the track at Cox Stadium Saturday afternoon.
Gomes, a junior from Modesto, Calif., clocked in at 1:51.89 in the 800 meters, breaking his own record set two years ago. Coming out fast, he moved up to second with 200 meters remaining before finishing fourth overall.
"He ran very well for the first 600 meters and just didn't have quite have it in the last 150," head coach Helen Lehman-Winters said. "Even though he faded at the finish, he put it out there and went for it and got a new record mark. Obviously you can't be disappointed in athletes that are going to go after it and try and get it done."
Senior Adam Smith closed his collegiate track career with a second place finish in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. Leading for a vast portion of the competition, Smith, a senior from Poway, Calif., was nipped at the finish. Trevor Araujo of Saint Mary's pulled even on the last jump and edged ahead to cross the line 16-hundredths of a second ahead of Smith's final mark of 9:25.46.
Jarrett Moore also recorded a top-10 finish on the day. Clocking in at 3:52.28 in the 1,500 meters, the junior finished with a season-best at the distance to stand in eighth in the field. Doubling up, the San Francisco native took first in his heat of the 5,000 meters, pulling out to a wide margin with six laps to go. His time was good for 19th overall.
"Today was a true last chance meet in that we had both Division I and Division II qualifying marks on the track today," Lehman-Winters noted. "Across the board I think we had legitimate performances and high quality marks at every distance, and we look forward to hosting this meet again next year."
The Dons now await the final field to be set for the NCAA West Preliminary Championships, held May 29-31 in Fayetteville, Ark.
