SAN FRANCISCO - USF's women's tennis team posted a 4-3 victory over No. 38 BYU this afternoon at the Olympic Club in San Francisco.
Â
"This was a great competitive match down to the wire in doubles and singles play against the 38
th ranked team in the country," said head coach
Hilary Somers. " We competed well the entire day. After letting the doubles point slip away, I was happy the girls believed in themselves for singles and claimed the match."
Â
Although the Cougars took the doubles point against the Dons,
Andrea Ka and
Marina Nikolic claimed their match against Toby Miclat and Brittanie Eraso 7-5.
Â
Andrea Ka led the change in momentum when she claimed her two sets win against Meghan Sheehan 6-3, 6-1 making her winning record for the spring season 7-3. With the match tied up 1-1,
Sofia Holmberg picked up her first win of the season against Morgan Anderson-Littlewood in a quick two set match of 6-2,6-1.
Â
BYU picked up the lead 3-2 as they picked up wins in number three and four singles. However,
Genevieve McCloskey did not give up and defeated Erica Valimaki 7-6 (5), 6-2 leaving
Thyra Taune on the court at second singles in hopes to take the match for the Dons.
Â
After winning her first set 7-5, falling in the second set 3-6, Taune pushed through to take the final set 6-2, and seal the victory for USF.
Â
Up next for the Dons will be match play against Santa Clara this Sunday, March 8, at 3 p.m. at the Olympic Club.
