Dons Clinch Match 4-3 Against Pacific

San Francisco - The University of San Francisco's women's tennis team worked out a 4-3 victory against the Pacific at the Olympic Club this afternoon.

The Dons have earned themselves a winning 10-7 record and are now 5-2 in the West Coast Conference. With just two more WCC matches left in their regular season, USF has solidified that they will be bringing with them a winning conference record into tournament play.

USF gained momentum as they dominated in doubles play against the Tigers at first and second doubles. Thyra Taune and Genevieve McCloskey left no room for Regina Suarez and Cristina Saenz de Buruaga Ruiz to even pick up a game as they earned a 6-0 win.  The duo of Andrea Ka and Marina Nikolic claimed the doubles point for USF as they defeated Hana Ritterova and Iveta Masarova 6-3.

Ka provided USF with a two-point advantage, as she was victorious in her match against UOP's top singles player, Iveta Masarova in two sets, 6-1, 6-4. With this win, Ka is now 22-5 overall and has a 6-1 record in WCC competition.

With UOP coming back to tie the match against USF at No. 2 and No. 6 singles, it was up to Nikolic and Hadzi-Tanovic to respond with winning matches for the Green and Gold.

Undertaking competitive back and forth play against Cristina Ferrari, NIkolic won her first set 6-4, fell in the second set 2-6, and served up the final set 6-2.

With UOP responding at No. 4 singles, and the match now at 3-3, the pressure was on Hadzi-Tanovic to clinch the match for USF. The senior rallied it against Saenz de Buruaga Ruiz in two long sets 7-6 (3), 7-5, to ceil the win.

"This was a good win to start off the weekend," said head coach Hilary Somers. "Their was great singles today from Ka and our seniors in their final home weekend for USF."

The Dons will continue their WCC action as they face Saint Mary's at the Olympic Courts tomorrow. USF will also be hosting their Senior Day, where a brief ceremony will take place to recognize seniors Hadzi-Tanovic and Nikolic. First serve is set to start at 4:30 pm.
