SAN FRANCISCO –– The USF women's cross country team finished second overall, while the men finished fourth, at the San Francisco Invitational on Saturday morning in Golden Gate Park's Speedway Meadows.
On the men's side, Ryan Driscoll led the Dons in the 8000M with a second-place finish in a time of 24:26.7. Behind Driscoll was Matt Leach, who finished fifth overall at 24:47.7.
"They ran a good race," said assistant cross country coach Benji Wetli. "It was a quick race and all of our guys ran faster than our freshmen last year, so that was a good thing to see."
Freshman Weronika Pyzik finished her first collegiate race with a fourth-place finish at 17:55.9 in the 5000M. Fellow freshman Emma Stahr turned in a very strong performance, finishing in 10th place at 18:21.0.
"Weronika ran really well and very controlled," Wetli said. "She's got a lot left. So, it was good to see her up at the front without having to exert herself."
In addition to Pyzik and Stahr, Kelsey Nielsen (18:24.1), Erin Thomas (18:45.4) and Ashley
Moffett (21:17.2) all participated in their first race of 2015 as well.
In the 8000M, USF freshman Caleb McClain placed 28th with a time of 26:10.4, Gunnar Vik finished close behind in 39th with a time of 26:32.6, Connor Cavassa ran a 26:40.2 and Cristian Monsalud turned in a time of 26:44.7. Junior Omar Solis also ran a 26:56.4.
The California Golden Bears won both the men's and women's races, led by Chris Walden (24:24.5) and Bethan Knights (17:29.1)
