USF graduates Joe and DeeDee Sammut have been named "Don of the Year" for their long support and commitment to USF Athletics, as announced by Director of Athletics Scott Sidwell.
The Don of the Year award is presented to an individual or family who has demonstrated exceptional commitment to USF Athletics and its student-athletes. The Sammuts will be presented with their award at the Father Hubert "Hub" Flynn Hall of Fame Dinner on Feb. 26.
Joe graduated from USF in 1975 with a degree in accounting while DeeDee earned her degree in sociology in 1974. Joe was also the head yell leader for USF Basketball as a senior and is still very much a vocal supporter of all Dons teams.
"We are thrilled to award Joe and DeeDee Sammut the Don of the Year Award for 2016," said Sidwell. "They are the heart and soul of our fan base and their unwavering support at all of our events shows their true commitment to our student-athletes."
"We are truly humbled and grateful to receive this award," said the Sammuts. "Throughout our student years and years following graduation it has been a wonderful experience to support USF Athletics on the Hilltop. We treasure the people we have met and the friendships we have formed through participating in activities and attending games. We are grateful to Scott, his staff and all of the coaches for the great job they are doing with our student-athletes and for representing the university so well."
USF's Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2016, which will comprise the 42nd group of inductees, includes Jennifer Heinser '10 (women's tennis), Chelsea Hunt '07 (women's soccer), Suzanne (Enos) O'Meara '80 (women's basketball / volleyball), Erik Visser '82 (men's soccer) and Dr. William Montgomery, who will be inducted in the special service category.
Formal induction ceremonies are scheduled for Friday, Feb. 26 at the Father Hubert "Hub" Flynn Hall of Fame Dinner in the McLaren Center on the USF campus. The festivities will begin with a reception at 6:30 p.m., followed by the dinner program at 7:30 p.m. The inductees will also be honored at halftime of the USF-Saint Mary's basketball game on Feb. 27.
