STANFORD, Calif. – The doubles duo of Emily Maxfield and Genevieve McCloskey highlighted the action for the San Francisco women at the ITA Northwest Regional held Oct. 21-25 on the courts at Taube Tennis Center.
Maxfield and McCloskey opened the weekend with an 8-3 victory over the pair of Paulette Wolak and Elizabeth Yao from Stanford only to draw the No. 13 tandem in the nation in Washington's Naur Abbes and Miki Kobayashi. USF's netters took down the No. 3 seed in the region, 8-5, and advanced to play yet another PAC-12 foe. Daneila Nasser and Nia Rose, Oregon's top duo, took the match to extra points in the round of 16, but yet again Maxfield and McCloskey found a way to prevail in the 8-7(5) win.
Their run through the bracket was halted in the quarterfinals by San Jose State's Miyo Kobayashi and Tamara Culibrk. Miyo Kobayashi is the sister of Washington's Miki Kobayashi, the Dons' second-round opponent.
Anna Sokiran also used the regional weekend to advance in the brackets, winning two of her three matches in the main draw. First, she defeated Marta Heinen of Eastern Washington in straight sets in the round of 128, and then Sokiran earned the 6-4, 6-2 victory over Portland's Anna Oberg before eventually falling in the round of 32.
The regional tournament concludes USF's fall slate, and the Dons hit the courts again on Jan. 18 in dual match play. In USF's first match of the spring, the Dons host Academy of Art at The Olympic Club at noon on Jan. 18. Then the Dons hit the road with matches at Sacramento State (Jan. 20) and UC Davis (Jan. 29) to conclude the month.
