USF - University of San Francisco or You Stay Forever? What is it about our school that creates such great passion and devotion from its sons and daughters?
The University of San Francisco Tuesday Testimonials tell that story in the words of the special men and women who make the Hilltop such an amazing place.
Bill Cartwright was a consensus second team All-American in 1977 and 1979 and graduated as the all-time leading scorer in the men's basketball program, the only man to eclipse the 2,000-point mark as a Don. The legendary center led USF to three trips to the NCAA Tournament before embarking on a 16-year NBA career with the New York Knicks, Chicago Bulls and Seattle Supersonics. The 7-1 center helped the Bulls win consecutive World Championships in 1991, 1992 and 1993. He then earned two more NBA titles as an assistant coach under Phil Jackson as part of his 16 year career coaching the sport. Cartwright returned to the Hilltop in 2016 as the Director of University Initiatives, serving the greater USF community and alumni base.
In this first Tuesday Testimonial, Bill reflects on his time as a student, an athlete, an alumnus, and now an employee at the University. He fondly reflects on his personal, professional and athletic development gained in his life as a Don.
"[Coming to USF] was really an awakening, because of the diversity of the school you really realize that the world is open to you and the possibilities of you really doing what you wanted to do, anything you wanted to do, was open," notes Cartwright. "As a person, I really grew here and I really learned a lot of lessons … what you learn here is you're not bounded by anything other than thought."
