USF Women Open Season at Battle in the Bay

SAN FRANCISCO – The San Francisco Dons opened the year at the Battle in the Bay Classic, pulling off three singles victories at the California Tennis Club on the first day of the tournament.
No. 3 seeded individual Anna Sokiran made her Dons' debut with a three-set win over Santa Clara's Nabila Farah, taking the match 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. USF two other victories, also from women wearing the Green and Gold for the first time came in sweeping fashion. Freshman Emily Maxfield made quick work of Pacific's Anneroos Nederstigt, dominating the match 6-1, 6-2. For sophomore Joselyn Treyes Albarracin, the Tiger she faced proved to put up a fight after falling 6-2 in the first set. Maayan Sela forced the tiebreak in the second before Treyes Albarracin gutted out the 7-6(5) set win to advance to the quarterfinal round.
Tomorrow's tournament schedule includes men's and women's doubles in the morning, beginning at 9 a.m., followed by a full slate of men's and women's singles play. For the advancing women in the bracket, afternoon play begins at 1 p.m. Fans are welcome and encouraged to attend the action at the Cal Club, but for those not in attendance, follow all the day's action with a courtside video livestream or via the audio broadcast at RadioTennis.com.
