USF - University of San Francisco or You Stay Forever? What is it about our school that creates such great passion and devotion from its sons and daughters?

The University of San Francisco Tuesday Testimonials tell that story in the words of the special men and women who make the Hilltop such an amazing place.

Joe Hallisy happened upon the Hilltop at a very early age through his father, Joe, who played soccer for the Dons during the mid-1930s before going onto a long career with the San Francisco Police Department. His brother, Jim, is a 1968 USF graduate and his daughter Kelly was a member of the Class of 2013. Although Joe went a different educational route, the San Francisco native and San Francisco State graduate became a mainstay at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center three decades ago.

He lacked formal voice or broadcasting training when he slipped behind the microphone for his first Dons game in the 1986-87 season, but that didn't stop Hallisy into becoming one of the most recognizable PA voices on the Bay Area sporting scene. In addition to his announcing duties at USF, which also includes men's and women's basketball and volleyball games, he has handled public address assignments for a multitude of other local events and teams, including the Golden Gloves boxing, World Cup soccer, the St. Patrick's Day Parade and the San Francisco Giants, for which he has served in a back-up PA role since 1993.

Here on Tuesday Testimonials, Hallisy reflects on how he got the coveted gig, recalls some of his favorite moments in the gym and speaks to the specialness that can be seen on and around campus, while as a parishioner at St. Ignatius as well on the USF sidelines.

Catch Joe's dulcet tones twice this week, as the women look to take over sole possession of third in the WCC standings when the squad takes on Saint Mary's on Thursday at 7 p.m. Then, USF welcomes Pacific to the Hilltop Saturday for a 2 p.m. tussle with the Tigers.

Learn more about the Hallisy in this special 2016 feature, "The Voice From Above."
