
XC | Six Dons Set for European Championships

SAN FRANCISCO – The University of San Francisco men's and women's cross country runners will toe the line at one of the top international competitions this Sunday. One former, four current and one future USF cross country athletes are set to compete at the 24th SPAR European Cross Country Championships in Samorin, Slovakia.
All told, a record 576 athletes and 37 countries will compete with six individual titles up for grabs. The Dons will dot the field in the U23 men's and women's races and the senior women's competition.
Senior, and 2017 All-American, Charlotte Taylor will represent Great Britain in the women's senior race. This will be Taylor's second appearance at the European Cross Country Championships. At last year's championships, Taylor raced to a fourth-place individual finish, while helping Team Great Britain capture the U23 crown.
Fellow USF 2017 All-Americans, Weronika Pyzik and Isabelle Brauer, will represent Poland and Sweden, respectively, in the U23 race. Brauer, competing for her fourth time at the European Championships, finished the 2016 U23 race in 22nd place. Pyzik finished 10th in the junior division in 2014.
Also lacing up for their respective country will be future USF runner Philippa Bowden (Great Britain), who will join the Dons in the 2018-19 campaign. She will be competing in the U23 race, and will be her first appearance at the European Cross Country Championships.
Elena Burkard '17, USF record holder in the 1,500-meters, will represent her native country Germany in the senior women's 8 kilometers. In her first appearance at Euro's in 2011, Burkard finished the U20 race in 11th place.
On the men's side, Jack Rowe will take to the U23 8K race for Team Great Britain. This is Rowe's first appearance at the European Cross Country Championships.
In 2016, the women's team of Great Britain and Northern Ireland won the U23 team championship for the second consecutive year, while the men finished fourth in the races held in Chia, Italy.
The races featuring Dons' runners will begin at 9:55 a.m. local time in Slovakia, or 12:55 a.m. pacific time. The U23 women's race will be followed by U23 men at approximately 10:35 a.m. Samorin time (1:35 a.m. PT), and the senior women are slated to start at 11:15 a.m. Samorin time (2:15 a.m. PT).
